The humble ‘mixtape’ has apparently been referred to as “the most widely practiced American art form” (not, as some of you had thought, the ‘performance art’ of transforming one’s self into Jabba The Hut through a diet solely consisting of McDonalds). I have always been an enthusiastic mixtape practicioner & afficionado, and to this day still waste precious hours obsessively compiling & mixing these personal soundtracks to my misanthropic existence. So on this page you will occasionally find ‘mixtapes’ that somehow relate to the droll & largely unintelligble writing that populates the rest of this site.

The good ‘ole audio cassette is well-suited to such mixes as it forces the listener to tackle the mix as a ‘linear’ listening experience, without the ability to skip through tracks or re-program the song order that CD players allow. Although I now put together my ‘mixtapes’ on CD-R, presenting them here as single MP3 files forces that same “narrative arc” on the listener. The files are 128kps – which is hopefully decent enough for you to enjoy on the personal-music-player-of-your-choice (these mixes are mastered to within an inch of my crude abilities), but of inferior-enough quality to encourage you to seek out anything you particularly like in its ‘proper’ (vinyl/CD) format…

Primavera Sound 2008
Put together as an audio ‘aide-mémoire’ following the excellent Primavera festival in Barcelona, 29 May – 01 June 2008. All tracks featured are songs I witnessed played over the course of the three days (except for The Microphones & Polvo tracks, as I’m not familiar enough with their work to have been able to identify what I was hearing).
